English 101A Course Schedule, Fall 2011

Research Paper Grading Rubric

This schedule is subject to change based on the needs of the class.

IMPORTANT NOTE: Print all online readings (unless otherwise indicated). If you fail to bring your printed readings, you may be marked absent for the day.

Also, print your homework! Unprinted or untyped homework will not receive credit. All homework assignments must be formatted in MLA style. For help formatting your Word document in MLA, see this video.

The date above the readings/writing assignments is the due date.

WEEK 1
M Aug. 29
Introduction to the course. In class we will read "Many With New College Degree Find the Job Market Humbling."
W Aug. 31
-Read Course Syllabus and Homework Guidelines. Prepare to be quizzed on the syllabus.
-Go back to the article I gave you in class and read the reader comments at the end. (If you misplaced the article, click here.)
-HW#1: Write a response to one of the reader comments (your choice).
-Also read "No Job and $50,000 in Student Debt. Now What?"
-Log into the online lab and familiarize yourself with it


WEEK 2
M Sept. 5 
Labor Day (no class)
W Sept. 7
-Take a peek at the student loan clock at http://www.finaid.org/loans/studentloandebtclock.phtml
-HW#2: Which of these two articles do you find more convincing? Explain.
-Listen to the Grammar Girl podcast on plagiarism: http://grammar.quickanddirtytips.com/what-is-plagiarism.aspx

WEEK 3
M Sept. 12
-Read the following articles (print only the first two):
-HW#3: Do you think the high cost of college tuition is a scam?
-Complete online lab #2 on Avoiding Plagiarism.
-Start the reading for Wednesday!
W Sept. 14
-Review the Pew Research on the value of higher education. Click here and here
-Be prepared for a collaborative quiz 

WEEK 4
M Sept. 19
-Begin group research assignment (explained in class)
-HW#4: Does college have any value for you aside from the economic/career benefits? Why or why not?
W Sept. 21
-Freewrite for 15 minutes (time yourself) on the paper topic. Bring your freewrite to class.

WEEK 5
M Sept. 26
-Write a thesis and rough outline of your paper to bring to class.
-Complete online lab #6 on Integrating Quotations
W Sept. 28
-Read handout on Types of Support
-Write a rough draft of your Argument Paper (minimum 3 full pages) and bring to class for peer review.

WEEK 6
M Oct. 3 
-"Almost final" draft of Argument Paper due (Thesis and body paragraphs only. No introduction or Works Cited list.)
-We will watch the film Food, Inc. in class
W Oct. 5
-Complete online lab #7 on Preparing the List of Works Cited
-Read handout on Works Cited list tips
-Write a draft of your Works Cited page for your Argument Paper and bring to class

WEEK 7
M Oct. 10
-Complete online lab #4 on Evaluating Information
-HW#5: Write an evaluation of Monsanto's website

In-class writing #1 (No makeups, so be there!)

WEEK 9

Final Draft of Argument Paper POSTPONED until Nov. 2

-Complete online lab #1 on Planning the Documented Paper
-Select topic for the research paper (from the list of topics I handed out on Monday)

WEEK 10

Start preliminary research for your paper.
W Nov. 2
Final draft of Argument Paper due (Be sure to include your Works Cited list)

WEEK 11
M Nov. 7
In-class writing #2 (no makeups)
W Nov. 9
-Complete online lab #3 on Finding Information
-Begin research process

WEEK 12
M Nov. 14
Using at least three different databases, find ten articles on your research paper topic. (Be sure to save them or email them to yourself!)
W Nov. 16
-Listen to the Grammar Girl podcast on Capitalizing Titles
-Write a Works Cited list for the articles you found. Bring your list to class.

WEEK 13
M Nov. 21
-Complete your first stage of research. At this point you should have about twenty sources.
-Read through your research and write a working thesis and rough outline for your paper. Bring thesis and rough outline to class to turn in.
W Nov. 23
No homework! We will have class today, though.

WEEK 14
M Nov. 28
-Bring in 2 COMPLETE body paragraphs of your research paper. Each body paragraph should be approximately one page.
-Complete online lab #5 on Using Parenthetical Citations
W Nov. 30
Bring in 3 FULL pages of your research paper

WEEK 15
M Dec. 5
-Go back and research aspects of your topic where you need more information. If you are having trouble finding info, please make an appointment to meet individually with a librarian, at Newark or at the main campus.
-Bring in 5 FULL pages of your research paper
W Dec. 7
RESEARCH PAPER DUE at the beginning of class. Please do not arrive to class late or your paper will be penalized. No late papers will be accepted.
Please submit your paper according to the guidelines on the assignment sheet. It is your responsibility to review these guidelines and check to see that you have met all the requirements. Don't forget your Works Cited page.

FINAL EXAM
The final exam will be an in-class essay.
The final exam is scheduled for Monday, Dec. 12, noon-2pm, in our regular classroom.
